On Friday, 27 March 2026, JM BUSHA 54 hosted a Leadership Dialogue at the Protea Hotel by Marriott, Wanderers in Johannesburg, bringing together thought leaders and engaged delegates in the theme: “What’s at stake when a Constitution and the Voice of the People are at odds?” The discussion centred on the proposed amendment to Zimbabwe’s Constitution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term, sparking critical reflections on constitutional integrity and democratic governance.

Speakers included the leader of the opposition in Zimbabwe, Mr Tendai Biti, Mr Arnold Tsunga, the Managing Partner at Tsunga Bamu Law, who provided the legal expertise on the subject. From the Human Rights view, Ms. Tanele Maseko, who is the CEO of Thulani Maseko foundation spoke and also proposed some solutions including the involvement of SADC.

It was underscored that while constitutions may evolve, amendments must remain rooted in the will of the people and guided by transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.

Concerns were raised by other delegates about the risks of eroding public trust and weakening democratic institutions when constitutional changes are perceived to prioritise political interests over the public good. The conversation also highlighted how such developments can influence governance trends across the African continent.

The dialogue reaffirmed the importance of open, solution-driven engagement in shaping Africa’s future.

JM BUSHA 54 continues to champion platforms that encourage bold, constructive conversations—advancing a vision of leadership grounded in accountability, peace, and the collective voice of the people.

for Peace and Unity

"Let us provide another corrective to Socialism, and prevent the Wealth we are beginning to build in our own countries from being used for the purpose of acquiring national power or prestige. Let us make sure that it is used solely for raising the standards of our people. Let us not allow the Wealth that we are creating to live side by Poverty and tolerate that Poverty. " - Julius K. Nyerere
