On Saturday 23 February 2019 we received the sad news that Zimbabwean born and South African musical icon Mme Dorothy Masuka passed away at the age of 83. The jazz legend and our very own recipient for the 2014 JM BUSHSA 54 Hear The Legends award for her contribution in the struggle for democracy through music will be remembered not only by South Africans but by the rest of Africa and the world.
Mme Dorothy Masuka rose to fame in the mid-1950s and became one of the first black recording female artists to achieve incredible success across southern and eastern Africa. She sang songs that were mostly political which resulted in contributing to the liberation of South Africans during the apartheid era.
The New York Times has reported that she was not only an ambassador for the liberation of people of South Africa, she also travelled across African countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya and performed on behalf of these country’s independence.
Her funeral service will take place this Sunday the 3rd of March 2019 at 9 am. The JM BUSHA 54 family would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mme Dorothy Masuka. Rest in Peace our Hear The Legend and you will be missed.
